What is a story, the W’s (who, what, where, when, why), artifacts from our land

Ingredients for today’s lab

Love, Z by Jessie Sima read by Rolando, Sebastian’s papá, a DZ designed newspaper banner cut into ready to glue strips, cookie cutters, rolling pins, pulp, scissors, stickers, glue, markers, large format paper

What just happened?

The most special “ingredient” from this LAB was our guest: Sebastian’s papá, who Rolando joined us with one of his and Sebastian’s favorite bedtime stories, Love, Z by Jessie Sima. In it the robot, Z goes on a quest to find out “What is love?” (I don’t know about you but the song comes to mind). Z’s quest became the perfect segue to asking questions and finding stories for our newspaper:

While sitting down to read the book it was clear how proud Sebastian was to have his papa at the school. With a huge smile across his face Sebastian shared his dad lap with Kai while telling the amigues how the book came from his home. Later in the day at Semillitas Sebastian proudly went to his cubby to look for Beatrice ( a character in the book). Having a dad visit your school is always the most exciting moment for a kid. Later it can be a little difficult when our grwon ups leave, but Sebastian was calmed when I invited him to again sit on my lap to share his book with the second group of amigues.

What is love?, amigues teach the grown ups:
Love is when people love people -Leo
I like to share my ice cream on a hot summer day. -Claudia
I don’t share my food. -Tino
Flowers - Rey
Snow- Lola
Kids are love -Leo
(hearing a child cry in the other room) Being sad when we miss our grown ups is love. Sometimes I am also sad when I miss my daughter who I love very much. -Eva

So many snowboards in the world (I wish I remember who said this)
I am making concrete -Rey

Some story ideas/questions gathered at circle time were: Who has a stuffy?, What is spooky?,
What is love?, What we like? What kids like to play

Livneh: “We need a bigger newspaper more and more- mas y mas for the whole town- it’s going to be interesting.”
Jude, “k-pop”
Zoya, “Magnatiles - a house”
Toli, “Una tienda”
Jude, “To the bakery”
Niko, “Frutas.”

Rey, “I want to write an article about not to touch sharp things. I want to write about healthy food. No sugar bugs because they eat your teeth and you get cavities.”
Leo, “Don’t touch anything and don’t swallow toothpaste and it’s not very good to do that -
you should spit it out.”

The other ingredient was a return to pulp. Nicole laid out the pulp with rollers and cookie cutters. Inspired by this image from the Love, Z, the amigues shaped the pulp to make artifacts from their lands. This illustration also reminded some friends of our favorite neighboring bakery Welcome Home.
