My name is Ana Mercedes Facenda and I am excited to introduce myself as the Director of Education at Mi Casita Bilingual Pre-School and Cultural Arts Center. It is an honor to work at a school dedicated to the arts, bilingualism, progressive education and serving the Brooklyn community. Most importantly, this will be a school dedicated to nurturing children in a loving home-like environment.
I come to you with 17 years experience as an early childhood bilingual educator with the New York City Public School system. I am a native Spanish speaker and I have taught Pre-K through grade 2 where I have served as a lead teacher, mentor teacher and staff developer. I also possess a dance/fitness background that I incorporate into my teaching to address literacy skills, multicultural history, social-emotional development as well as physical development. I have also implemented a kindergarten mindfulness and meditation curriculum where children meditated daily. I plan on weaving these practices into the fabric of Mi Casita.
As a multilingual educator, I am a strong advocate for bilingual education. I believe that when children have the opportunity to learn another language it allows them to be more focused, empathetic, and successful both academically and socially. When you combine dual language bilingual education with an arts based progressive philosophy, children are able to acquire and maintain language in an organic setting where they learn via the arts across all the content areas in an environment that respects where each child is developmentally.
To quote the Brazilian educator Paolo Freire, “ I cannot be a teacher without exposing who I am.” I believe that it is the responsibility of educators to nurture children as they become kind, compassionate, critical thinkers with an innate passion for curiosity and life-long learning. As the Director of Education, my goal is to make sure that all children at Mi Casita are receiving a high quality progressive bilingual education in a loving and encouraging environment full of art, wonderment and joy. I will spend time getting to know all of the children as well as their personalities and learning styles. I will spend just as much time curating and designing relevant and memorable learning experiences for our children and families. Family engagement is also extremely important in the early years; I look forward to meeting each and every Mi Casita family and working together to ensure that your child's first school experience is significant and memorable.
Once again, I am so thankful to have the opportunity to share my knowledge, culture and experiences with this wonderful community. I look forward to getting to know you and your children. I will be working hard with Mi Casita's Director, Eva Ruiz, to bring her vision of serving more families to life in our new home at 1060 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn.
